Whenever you begin in a building project you must get a permit from your local government. This will require a building plan. In the past it was necessary to build trusses by hand, however today most are pre-made and can be special ordered at a lumberyard or building supply store. This is the cheapest and easiest route for a do-it-yourselfer.

Roofing is a dangerous job. Before you begin make sure you have safe tools that you are familiar with. Also be sure to read any safety warnings on your supplies. Always wear gloves and goggles to protect your body.

Depending on the type of roof you build you may need to install soffits. Your building plan should detail whether this is necessary or not.

The final step to building your roof is adding shingles and/or other topical agents such as fire barrier coating or leak barrier coating. There are many kinds of shingles available.
