Roofing: Is It Time to Replace?

by Joanna Harris

Roofing is a very important part of your house construction. Roof is mainly required to protect you from rain, wind and other environmental features. Leaking roof and resulting stained surface of the ceiling are the kind of things which disturb you the most. You can get an opportunity to replace your leaking roof in dry and sunny weather.

It is not always that you have experience with roofing. There are many things which need to be pondered upon while replacing your roof like the type of preparation you need, kind of materials to be used, finding right and experienced contractor.

Let us discuss few useful tips regarding roofing.

First of all, survey the condition of your roof. If you find out that you can do without replacing your roof, just do not replace it. In that case, you will have to go for some simple repairs which would help you postpone the roof repair for two or three years. You can use an asphalt-glass roof for replacing worn out and brittle shingles.

Besides asphalt-glass roof, you have other options available to you. Though asphalt-glass roofing is the conventional choice but you can explore other options as well, like concrete masonry, tiles, metal roofing and more.

Without checking the condition and structure of your roof, never add a layer of new roofing over the existing one. Also make sure, you are using the right material. In case, you add new layer over the old one, it will add to the weight of the roof. Make sure that structure can bear that much weight.

Every roofing system has different installation requirements. Make sure that you are fulfilling all the installation requirements for a particular type of roofing material. For instance, when you use roofing materials like asphalt-glass shingles or tiles, there should be base made up of solid sheathing like plywood. If you are using wood shingles, it would require open sheathing to let the roofing material breathe.

Before your contractor tears off the existing roofing material, just ask him to protect your house from any resulting damage. Protect your windows and doors by laying some kind of covering over them. Remove the debris instantly. While roof is being replaced, arrange for proper drainage system on the roof. While looking for the contractor, have the bids from at least three contractors and decide for the best one.

Getting Roof Repairs in Portland OR by Mark Starr

Getting roof repair in OR for a home or commercial building is not a task many of us look to with pleasure. Roof repair in Portland, and everywhere else for that matter costs money. As a result, many of us ignore the issue for as long as we possibly can.

However, avoiding roof repair for your Portland home or business can cost a lot more in the long run. Residential and commercial roofing in the Portland area doesn’t have to involve a grief stricken experience. Review the following for details on how to tell if you need maintenance for your roof and ease the process of OR roof repair.

How to Tell If You Need Roof Repair for Your Portland Home or Business

Just because the roof has yet to cave in, doesn’t mean your OR roof isn’t in need of repair. Consider the age of your roof, as this is the most important aspect for determining whether you need repairs or an entirely new installation.

A good milestone for evaluating your residential or commercial roofing installation is within 10 years. Ask a qualified roofing contractor in the Portland area to conduct an inspection.

The condition of the shingles is telltale for whether your OR home or business is in need of roof repair. Your Portland roofing contractor will check for discoloration and other signs of wear, such as cracks and curling edges.

If the shingles are worn, your residential or commercial roofing contractor will likely need to conduct a more thorough investigation. Examining the condition of the underlying roofing structure will reveal the extent of your roof repair needs.

Roof Repair Portland — Check Your Insurance Policy

In some cases, your insurance policy may cover some of the costs for your Portland roof repair needs. Contact your provider to determine whether you have coverage for anything in relation to repair and maintenance.

Find a Qualified Roofing Contractor for Roof Repair in Portland

Get the most from your residential or commercial roofing job in Portland and hire a qualified contractor. Avoid the Portland roofing contractor who lowers the price tag and offers shoddy workmanship in return.

Look for a professional who can address all of your OR roof repair needs. Make sure they are licensed, insured and provide a fair warranty that covers materials and workmanship.

Have your roof inspected at least yearly.  Often expensive repairs can be avoided by correcting a small damage area now.  As Franklin said, “a stitch in time saves nine.”

Roofing Tips From Louisville’s Roofer

Roofing Tips For The Do It Yourselfer

Whenever you begin in a building project you must get a permit from your local government. This will require a building plan. After you have your building plan and have received a permit you are ready to begin building. In the past it was necessary to build trusses by hand, however today most are pre-made and can be special ordered at a lumberyard or building supply store. This is the cheapest and easiest route for a do-it-yourselfer.

Roofing is a dangerous job. Before you begin make sure you have safe tools that you are familiar with. Also be sure to read any safety warnings on your supplies. Always wear gloves and goggles to protect your body.

roof repair louisville ky
To begin installation, start with the end trusses. After these are installed you may move on to the side trusses. These will be difficult to lift and you will need to hire a crane. Next it is time to place the sheathing. On top of the sheathing you should place builders felt this will help to protect your new roof. Depending on the type of roof you build you may need to install soffits. Your building plan should detail whether this is necessary or not.

If the roof you are installing is part of an addition you must follow all of these guidelines however there is an additional step. After installing the trusses but before installing the sheathing you must install valley jacks were the new roof and old roof join.

The final step to building your roof is adding shingles and/or other topical agents such as fire barrier coating or leak barrier coating. There are many kinds of shingles available. Durability and style are both important. You want your home to look nice, but you also want a product that is affordable and will last.

While building a roof on your own is difficult, the money you save can be well worth it. Just remember with this and any other building project you do make sure you have the proper permit.

Buying What You Need to Remodel Your Kitchen

Thinking of redoing your kitchen?  There are many places in Louisville to get materials.  Lowes, Home Depot, K-I Home Planning Center, Jefferson Lumber, and more.  Centurion’s consultants can help you pick the best materials and suppliers for your job.

Have you recently decided to remodel your kitchen?  If so, have you decide what you would like to get done?  Whether you are only interested in changing your kitchen cabinets or if you want to remodel every inch of your kitchen, you will need supplies. The supplies that you need will all depend on the type of remodeling that you plan on doing. Despite the fact that your kitchen remodeling supplies will vary, you can commonly purchase them all from the same place.

As previously mentioned, the type of kitchen remodeling you plan on doing will have an impact on which supplies you will need. For example, if you are planning on replacing your kitchen cabinets, you will need to find new cabinets to install. The same can be said for kitchen flooring, lighting, and countertops.  If you need to purchase a fairly large number of kitchen remodeling supplies, say if you are planning on remodeling all or the majority of your kitchen, you may want to shop at one of your local home improvement stores.  Most home improvement stores have a fairly large selection of home remodeling supplies and materials, including laminate countertops, floor tiles, ceiling tiles, light fixtures, and cabinets.  Purchasing all of your remodeling supplies at once will help to save you time.

Although it may be a good idea to shop at one of your local home improvement stores, you may not want to.  If this is the case, you should examine the internet and what it has to offer. There are a number of online retailers that would be willing to deliver their kitchen remodeling supplies directly to your door.  In addition to traditional retailers, you can also find other individuals and companies who specialize in producing quality, customized products, such as kitchen cabinets.  Whether you can’t find what you are looking for locally or if you want to have something, such as your kitchen cabinets, custom designed, you are advised to look online.  A simple internet search should return the results that you were looking for.

When it comes to home improvement projects, it is important that you get the items or materials that you need, such as floor tiles or light fixtures, but you cannot complete a home improvement project without the right tools.  If you do have some home improvement experience, there is a good chance that you may already have most of the tools that you need.  If you need additional tools or if you don’t have any at all, you will need to purchase yourself some.  The tools that you need will all depend on the remodeling that you are doing, that is why it is a good idea to familiarize yourself with project instructions, as well as the tools that are needed before you get started.  If you are purchasing your remodeling materials from a home improvement store, it may be a good idea to save yourself an extra trip and buy your tools at the same time.

As the one in charge of remodeling, you can shop for materials, supplies, and tools wherever you want to.  Despite the fact that you have complete control over your kitchen remodeling project, as well as what is or isn’t being used, you may want to take the time to compare the prices of everything that you need to buy.  As long as you get the tools and materials that you need, it really shouldn’t matter, but why pay more money than you need to?

Louisville Roofing Notes 502-298-8825

For Louisville Roofing call Centurion: 502-298-8825.  Centurion Home Improvements and Roofing of Louisville would like to offer a few notes about your roof.

  1. When a roof leaks the problem can be worse than waterspots on the ceiling.  The wood underneath can soak up the leaking water and rot.  The wood gets weaker and will eventually loose strength enough to break.
  2. A leak is easy to spot when you start getting water spots on your ceiling.  Before that happens you should be inspecting your roof.  Go out a couple of times a year and give it a good look.  If you have binoculars that’s even better.  Look for cracked or missing roofing tiles.
  3. 3. Your roof is one of the most important parts of your home.  It protects everything from the elements, without it water damage.  Even health problems can come of it because moisture facilitates mold and fungus growth that can cause respiratory and other health problems.  These things can be harmful to anyone especially young children.   Mold is even known to trigger chronic fatigue syndrome so don’t take it lightly.
  4. By the way, if you have water spots on a white plaster ceiling, they sometimes can be lightened or removed by putting plastic over your furniture and spraying Clorox Cleanup on the area.  It’s amazing what it will do.  Wear old clothes and it’s best to have eye protection and a painters mouth cover. That’s it for now.  If you don’t need a roof but just need some questions answered please feel free to call or email us.  We love to hear from people who find our website and we like to help.

In this article, you will be introduced to the most typical reasons for roof repair. If you are questioning whether or not it is time to seek out assistance to repair this aspect of your home, this information may help you confirm your decision.

Many individuals do not realize that it takes a certain amount of maintenance to stay on top of roof complications. As a matter of fact, the roof is often the most overlooked aspect of the home. It is important to ensure that an inspection of this area of the home is done on a regular basis. This will save you the time and money that is often involved in basic roof repair. Overlooking something as simple as a broken shingle can eventually lead to repairs that can run into the thousands. Lack of maintenance is often the most typical reason for repair.

Weather exposure is the next reason that many roofs must be repaired. The elements of nature can play a huge role on the health of this part of the home. Wind, rain, heat, hail, snow, and more can all lead to damaging effects on the roofs of homes. This includes cracked shingles, water damage, heat damage and more. It is important to ensure that your roof is equipped with building materials that are appropriate to the weather conditions of the area that you live in. Choosing cheap, low-quality materials that do not handle well in certain weather conditions can prove to be a very expensive mistake.

Many homeowners do not realize it until it is too late, but there are many situations in which roof repairs must be done because the roof was improperly constructed and designed. These complications may include weak structures that buckle easily under pressure, a slope that is considered to be inadequate, selecting materials that are not durable enough to withstand the overall shape and design of the home, and even selecting materials that are not considered to be quality enhanced and hold up to certain weather conditions. If you want to avoid the complication of roof repair, it is necessary to avoid these situations.

Improper drainage is also considered to be a serious problem when it comes to roof repair. Not having the proper drainage situations the roof for excessive water damage. Believe it or not, many homeowners do not even put a drainage system in place on their roof. When this happens, it can really put a damper on the finances of that homeowner. Remodeling Your Bathroom: How You Can Pay for It

Have you recently decided that you would like to have your bathroom remodeled? If so, have you already started making the changes? As much as some homeowners would like to have their bathrooms remodeled, not all do so. One of the reasons for that is the cost. Unfortunately, bathroom remodeling can get quite expensive. However, even though it may appear as if you cannot afford to have your bathroom remodeled, you may still be able to. There are a number of different ways that you can go about paying for your bathroom remodeling.

One of the most common ways that bathroom remodeling is paid for is by financing. If you are a homeowner, your home could also benefit from a little bit of remodeling. This benefit is an increase in value. Since many homes see an increase in value, after a bathroom remodeling project has been completed, many financial institutions feel comfortable giving out loans to qualifying homeowners. If you are looking to have your bathroom remodeled, but you do not have the cash to do so, you may want to approach one of your local banks for a loan. These loans are often referred to as home improvement loans. Depending on your credit, you should easily be able to afford a bathroom remodeling project with a loan.

As previously mentioned, most financial institutions only had out loans to well qualifying individuals. A well qualified individual is typically someone is has a spotless credit history or at least a decent one. If you are looking to have your bathroom remodeled, but you are unable to obtain financing, you don’t necessarily have to give up your remodeling dreams. Another way that you could pay for your remodeling is by only taking it one step at a time. Although you may have hoped to remodel your whole bathroom, you may only want to focus on one part of it at a time. For instance, you could start with replacing your bathroom floor, and then get a new bathtub and maybe even a new sink after that. Talking small steps is one of the best ways to afford a bathroom remodeling project, especially if you are unable to obtain financing.

Another way that you could afford to have your bathroom remodeled is if you place the repairs on your credit card. The only problem with doing is the high fees that you may be charged; however, credit cards are great alternatives to home improvement loans. In fact, if you are doing your own bathroom remodeling, instead of hiring the assistance of a professional, it may be easier for you charge your remodeling costs. This is because all you will really need to pay for is the supplies, materials, and tools needed. Depending on the fees associated with your credit card, as well as the overall cost of your bathroom remodeling project, you may also want to take your remodeling in small strides. Doing only one remodeling project at a time is a great way to lessen the amount of money you are forced to repay right away.

As you can see, there are a number of different ways that you can go about affording to have your bathroom remodeled. Before making any decisions that will be set in stone, it may be a good idea to sit back and fully examine the advantages and disadvantages of your options. Doing so may help to prevent you from having to pay more money for your kitchen remodeling project than you need to.

Tips In Getting Started To Remodel The Basement

By Terry Edwards

There is no doubt about it; if you remodel the basement you will add more value and equity into your home. In fact it is one of the best home improvement projects to do just that. It’s basically “free” space that can give you plenty of extra square feet to put in a family room, bedrooms, baths, etc. But, before starting any kind of basement remodeling project you will want to accomplish several things first. Here’s a look at a few good tips to keep in mind when contemplating a new basement remodel.

Of course, the very first thing you will want to do is decide on whether you are going to do the remodeling job yourself or hire an outside contractor. There are advantages to both, but if you do not have the necessary experience in areas such as electrical wiring, carpentry and plumbing, then hiring a contractor is your best bet. That said if you do have some basic carpentry skills, doing the work yourself will give you a great deal of satisfaction and pride that will last a lifetime.

If you do choose to remodel yourself you will next want to design the project and come up with plans on how you want to do it. Are you only going to basically paint the walls, add a floor or a few walls, etc?

Once you have your plan it’s time to clean out the basement. This is the perfect time to bring the kids into the mix! Make it a family clean up project. You definitely have to remove all the junk before you begin painting, nailing 2×4′s and building walls, and the list goes on.

Once you have everything cleared out of the basement, do a good inspection. What do the walls look like? Is there any type of mold problem? Are there cracks in the foundation or floor? Do you have water coming in anywhere? These are all very important issues that can greatly affect your entire basement remodeling project, or even bring it to a screeching halt.

If you do notice problem areas that need addressed, be sure you address them. Don’t make the mistake of simply trying to cover them up. It will always come back to hurt you later. I’ve seen it happen so many times. And then when it does, you’re looking at spending even more money in the future to make it right. So do it right the first time and you’ll be happier down the road.

Now that you have accomplished all the preparation work, you can begin your basement remodel project. Put these tips into action and you will make your home improvement project go a whole lot smoother.

You can find out more about how to Remodel The Basement as well as much more information on everything to do with basements and basement remodeling at http://www.BasementTips.com

How to Remodel A Small Bathroom

By Ken Marlborough

Not all bathrooms can be lavish spaces with whirlpool tubs and two separate vanities. For some bathrooms, space is at a premium and knocking out walls is not an option, but remodeling must be done. Small bathroom remodeling presents its own complications, but with the right information, a small bathroom-remodeling project can shine.

Before beginning your small bathroom remodeling, design a floor plan that maximizes the room’s useable space. Don’t be afraid to design up by incorporating free-floating cabinets. Use mirrors to stretch a small bathroom’s space, and keep the color scheme simple. Keep a small bathroom bright, fresh, and inviting with coordinated colors and accessories.

Pare down the scale in your bathroom. Big items take up more space in the bathroom and look bulky. Corner sinks are simple and small. These sinks free up visual space below, but don’t provide the counter space and cabinet space that a traditional sink provides. Another option is a pedestal sink. These sinks have a more classic design and are free standing. Wall-mounted sinks save space but do not have counter space. Both types of sinks do not provide storage space underneath. Most home-improvement stores stock smaller sinks, or you can custom order one from a cabinet shop for a price.

A simple way to conserve space is to do away with a tub and just use a shower. Smaller tubs, however, are available, although most cannot handle whirlpool faucets. Any tub less than five feet long will probably spill the water sprayed by the whirlpool faucets.

Pick a toilet that can sit close to the wall to conserve space, and the size of the seat and tank design determine just how much space the toilet will use. Also pay attention to the size of the home’s original toilet. Older homes have toilets with 10 to 14 inches between the wall and the toilet drain, but newer homes typically have 12 inches. The wrong toilet won’t fit. Buying a toilet with a low tank takes up less visual space and compact toilets leave more room, but as with any small bathroom remodeling project, use these suggestions to find a toilet that is both stylish and fits in the room.

Finally, limit what you bring into the bathroom. To save space in a cramped bathroom, for example, it may be best to have a dressing area in a bedroom. Limit the number of accessories — clutter can easily make a small bathroom look smaller.

Planning a small remodeling may take extra planning, but the resulting clean, beautiful, an uncluttered bathroom will be an inviting space.

It’s Time to Remodel Your Bathroom! Do You Know What to Do?

By Christopher W SmithHow can you tell when the time is right to do a makeover on your bathroom? It’s probably a job you’ve been putting off while, telling yourself that it really doesn’t look all that bad. After all, the toilet works most of the time, and only a little of the grout is gone from between the tiles, and there’s just a little rust that you can’t get out of the bathtub, and… Wait a minute! I’d say it’s time for a makeover. What do you think? Take a good look around and see what other little things you can find that are signaling you that now’s the time:

Start by looking at all the little details you might have been ignoring. Are your porcelain fixtures looking a bit yellow? Maybe there’s a ceiling tile missing from the renovation of 1974. If you have wallpaper, is it starting to curl up a bit on the edges? None of these problems in itself is a world-stopper, but they are still the clues you need to motivate you to get busy remodeling.

If your bathroom still looks like something out of the ’70s, that’s another clue. Look for the 1″ wall tiles, stained vinyl flooring, and the colors that will date your room on their own: harvest gold, avocado green, and bright oranges. If this is what you’re seeing, it’s definitely time you did something about it.

A good time to remodel is when you’ve decided to sell your house. A nice bathroom is a real selling point for most people and can even raise the value of your home. You know for yourself, from being in some yucky public restrooms that no one likes a crummy bathroom, so spruce yours up a bit, and you’ll have a hit on your hands.

It may be that you don’t want to completely remodel everything in the bathroom. Maybe you’re only interested in making it look better without the effort and expense of an extensive makeover. One way to do this is by changing the accessories in the room. If your bathroom is too far gone, this won’t work, but if the room is just looking tired and dreary, new accessories can make a world of difference. You might get new fixtures, some fluffy towels, soft cozy rugs, or bright shower and window curtains. By adding these new things, you’ll probably be amazed at how much nicer your old bathroom looks.

For the major overhauls, you might want to hire a bathroom contractor. I know they cost money, but unless you’re a better plumber than I am, you will find it money well spent. You don’t have to hire a contractor to do the whole room, but it would be good for any plumbing and fixture installation you want to do. Have you ever lifted a porcelain bathtub? Believe me, a contractor comes in mighty handy for that kind of work. Find someone who comes with a lot of experience. He’ll have been in hundreds of bathrooms and will be able to give you design tips that he’s seen elsewhere. He’ll also be able to help you maximize your available space.

Hopefully you’ve now realized some of the benefits that will be yours if you do decide on a bathroom remodel. It doesn’t matter what type of makeover you decide to do, you’ll love the improvements you can make. You can completely change the look of your bathroom with a little effort and a few new accessories. How about getting started right away?

Remodel Contract Saavy

By Richard J. Roll

The home improvement bug hits many homeowners hardest in the Fall of the year. It’s a prime time to make improvements that will reduce energy bills during the winter months, for instance. You may have been waiting for summer to end to put on an addition. Or maybe you’re preparing to spiff-up the exterior prior to selling. Whatever the motivation for making improvements, you will be probably dealing with one or more home improvement contractors. This is a good time to brush up on your homeowner-contractor skills. The ancient adage, ‘Caveat emptor’ (Let the buyer beware) is never more true than when making home improvements.

The more homeowners understand about the basics of the home improvement business, the less likely it is they will have negative experiences with contractors, according to homeownership advocates.

What does a homeowner need to know?

There are three fundamental rules of contracting for home improvements that will help take the mystery and guesswork out of hiring a contractor:

  1. Do your homework
  2. That means not only knowing where to look for prospective contractors. It means knowing what references to ask for and what red flags to watch out for. Preventing problems before they occur is always a wise investment of a homeowner’s time. Taking advantage of the existing consumer protection services that are available should be an automatic first-step for any owner who relocates into a new neighborhood or state.

  3. Create a strong contract
  4. It’s not safe to assume your contractor’s standard agreement will protect your interests, as a homeowner. Frequently it’s quite the opposite. But, many homeowners don’t know what to look for in a good contract. Whether you are a do-it-yourself type or a homeowner who would rather seek professional assistance, there are multiple ways to insure that any home improvement contract you enter into is clear, thorough and fair. You should learn how to exercise your rights as a consumer, too. What’s in a good contract?

  5. Know how to compare bidsOne of the easiest-to-learn but least-exercised homeowner skill is that of asking multiple companies to submit bids, and then selecting the most appropriate company for your needs. And guess what? It’s NOT usually the low bidder that turns out to be best. The reasons may surprise you. But, if you haven’t taken the time to be a comparison shopper for home improvements, in the way you are with most other products, you are exposing yourself to a variety of potential abuses.

How to Remodel a Kitchen – The Necessary Basics

By Hector V. Jameson

The question of how to remodel a kitchen is not one to be answered in one page. In fact the contractors have gone to school and read many books to finally understand and be able to do it properly. However I will make an attempt to provide the fundamentals on this subject.

One thing is certain, you will have to keep reading and researching on this subject. Alternatively you could just hire a kitchen remodeling contractor to do the job for you.

Where should you start?

You need to start by assessing your kitchen usage patterns. This will enable you to determine the quality and extent of the remodeling task. For example, ask yourself the following questions; do you entertain a lot? Do you have a large or small family? And do you need a lot of dishware or glassware. You should also consider the amount of storage that you desire and the style of appliances that you want.

To help you find the appropriate design you can look through some magazines. Compile the cut outs and keep them all together for the next stage.

This would be deciding on the material to use. You could go with light wood, dark wood, painted cabinets, contemporary or traditional style etc. In fact you could simply choose to reface your kitchen cabinets and do minor replacements. Other things to consider include, flooring and countertops and backsplashes.

The next stage is to find a kitchen designer to populate a 3-d version of what you are looking for. When calling up the designer you need to have taken all the necessary measurements for your kitchen i.e. floor, cabinet, doors etc. You should at least have a floor plan based on the cut outs from the magazine and your own vision of the kitchen. The last stage would be hiring a kitchen remodeling contractor. This is the last stage on remodeling of the kitchen. Not unless you want to do it all by yourself.

I know that some people prefer to do it themselves. Let me tell you now, doing it on your own is not as simple as those DIY shops make it out to be. Spare yourself the trouble and find a kitchen remodeling contractor that will do the job brilliantly.

I do not have a contractor in mind but you can click the link to Find the best kitchen remodeling contractors in your area.
