By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Andrew_W_John]Andrew W John

Roof repair…just the thought of it sends thoughts of dread into the person who must perform it, or have it done. There are many reasons why a roof may need to be repaired. In this article, you will be introduced to the most typical reasons for roof repair. If you are questioning whether or not it is time to seek out assistance to repair this aspect of your home, this information may help you confirm your decision.

Many individuals do not realize that it takes a certain amount of maintenance to stay on top of roof complications. As a matter of fact, the roof is often the most overlooked aspect of the home. It is important to ensure that an inspection of this area of the home is done on a regular basis. This will save you the time and money that is often involved in basic roof repair. Overlooking something as simple as a broken shingle can eventually lead to repairs that can run into the thousands. Lack of maintenance is often the most typical reason for repair.

Weather exposure is the next reason that many roofs must be repaired. The elements of nature can play a huge role on the health of this part of the home. Wind, rain, heat, hail, snow, and more can all lead to damaging effects on the roofs of homes. This includes cracked shingles, water damage, heat damage and more. It is important to ensure that your roof is equipped with building materials that are appropriate to the weather conditions of the area that you live in. Choosing cheap, low-quality materials that do not handle well in certain weather conditions can prove to be a very expensive mistake.

Many homeowners do not realize it until it is too late, but there are many situations in which roof repairs must be done because the roof was improperly constructed and designed. These complications may include weak structures that buckle easily under pressure, a slope that is considered to be inadequate, selecting materials that are not durable enough to withstand the overall shape and design of the home, and even selecting materials that are not considered to be quality enhanced and hold up to certain weather conditions. If you want to avoid the complication of roof repair, it is necessary to avoid these situations.

Improper drainage is also considered to be a serious problem when it comes to roof repair. Not having the proper drainage situations the roof for excessive water damage. Believe it or not, many homeowners do not even put a drainage system in place on their roof. When this happens, it can really put a damper on the finances of that homeowner. Having a few dollars to spare in order to implement a proper drain system is much more efficient than having to put out thousands to have the entire roof replaced!

Have you recently decided that you would like to have your bathroom remodeled? If so, have you already started making the changes? As much as some homeowners would like to have their bathrooms remodeled, not all do so. One of the reasons for that is the cost. Unfortunately, bathroom remodeling can get quite expensive. However, even though it may appear as if you cannot afford to have your bathroom remodeled, you may still be able to. There are a number of different ways that you can go about paying for your bathroom remodeling.

One of the most common ways that bathroom remodeling is paid for is by financing. If you are a homeowner, your home could also benefit from a little bit of remodeling. This benefit is an increase in value. Since many homes see an increase in value, after a bathroom remodeling project has been completed, many financial institutions feel comfortable giving out loans to qualifying homeowners. If you are looking to have your bathroom remodeled, but you do not have the cash to do so, you may want to approach one of your local banks for a loan. These loans are often referred to as home improvement loans. Depending on your credit, you should easily be able to afford a bathroom remodeling project with a loan.

As previously mentioned, most financial institutions only had out loans to well qualifying individuals. A well qualified individual is typically someone is has a spotless credit history or at least a decent one. If you are looking to have your bathroom remodeled, but you are unable to obtain financing, you don’t necessarily have to give up your remodeling dreams. Another way that you could pay for your remodeling is by only taking it one step at a time. Although you may have hoped to remodel your whole bathroom, you may only want to focus on one part of it at a time. For instance, you could start with replacing your bathroom floor, and then get a new bathtub and maybe even a new sink after that. Talking small steps is one of the best ways to afford a bathroom remodeling project, especially if you are unable to obtain financing.

Another way that you could afford to have your bathroom remodeled is if you place the repairs on your credit card. The only problem with doing is the high fees that you may be charged; however, credit cards are great alternatives to home improvement loans. In fact, if you are doing your own bathroom remodeling, instead of hiring the assistance of a professional, it may be easier for you charge your remodeling costs. This is because all you will really need to pay for is the supplies, materials, and tools needed. Depending on the fees associated with your credit card, as well as the overall cost of your bathroom remodeling project, you may also want to take your remodeling in small strides. Doing only one remodeling project at a time is a great way to lessen the amount of money you are forced to repay right away.

As you can see, there are a number of different ways that you can go about affording to have your bathroom remodeled. Before making any decisions that will be set in stone, it may be a good idea to sit back and fully examine the advantages and disadvantages of your options. Doing so may help to prevent you from having to pay more money for your kitchen remodeling project than you need to.

Not all bathrooms can be lavish spaces with whirlpool tubs and two separate vanities. For some bathrooms, space is at a premium and knocking out walls is not an option, but remodeling must be done. Small bathroom remodeling presents its own complications, but with the right information, a small bathroom-remodeling project can shine.

Before beginning your small bathroom remodeling, design a floor plan that maximizes the room’s useable space. Don’t be afraid to design up by incorporating free-floating cabinets. Use mirrors to stretch a small bathroom’s space, and keep the color scheme simple. Keep a small bathroom bright, fresh, and inviting with coordinated colors and accessories.

Pare down the scale in your bathroom. Big items take up more space in the bathroom and look bulky. Corner sinks are simple and small. These sinks free up visual space below, but don’t provide the counter space and cabinet space that a traditional sink provides. Another option is a pedestal sink. These sinks have a more classic design and are free standing. Wall-mounted sinks save space but do not have counter space. Both types of sinks do not provide storage space underneath. Most home-improvement stores stock smaller sinks, or you can custom order one from a cabinet shop for a price.

A simple way to conserve space is to do away with a tub and just use a shower. Smaller tubs, however, are available, although most cannot handle whirlpool faucets. Any tub less than five feet long will probably spill the water sprayed by the whirlpool faucets.

Pick a toilet that can sit close to the wall to conserve space, and the size of the seat and tank design determine just how much space the toilet will use. Also pay attention to the size of the home’s original toilet. Older homes have toilets with 10 to 14 inches between the wall and the toilet drain, but newer homes typically have 12 inches. The wrong toilet won’t fit. Buying a toilet with a low tank takes up less visual space and compact toilets leave more room, but as with any small bathroom remodeling project, use these suggestions to find a toilet that is both stylish and fits in the room.

Finally, limit what you bring into the bathroom. To save space in a cramped bathroom, for example, it may be best to have a dressing area in a bedroom. Limit the number of accessories — clutter can easily make a small bathroom look smaller.

Planning a small remodeling may take extra planning, but the resulting clean, beautiful, an uncluttered bathroom will be an inviting space.

The home improvement bug hits many homeowners hardest in the Fall of the year. It’s a prime time to make improvements that will reduce energy bills during the winter months, for instance. You may have been waiting for summer to end to put on an addition. Or maybe you’re preparing to spiff-up the exterior prior to selling. Whatever the motivation for making improvements, you will be probably dealing with one or more home improvement contractors. This is a good time to brush up on your homeowner-contractor skills. The ancient adage, ‘Caveat emptor’ (Let the buyer beware) is never more true than when making home improvements.

The more homeowners understand about the basics of the home improvement business, the less likely it is they will have negative experiences with contractors, according to homeownership advocates.

What does a homeowner need to know?

There are three fundamental rules of contracting for home improvements that will help take the mystery and guesswork out of hiring a contractor:

Do your homework

That means not only knowing where to look for prospective contractors. It means knowing what references to ask for and what red flags to watch out for. Preventing problems before they occur is always a wise investment of a homeowner’s time. Taking advantage of the existing consumer protection services that are available should be an automatic first-step for any owner who relocates into a new neighborhood or state.

Create a strong contract

It’s not safe to assume your contractor’s standard agreement will protect your interests, as a homeowner. Frequently it’s quite the opposite. But, many homeowners don’t know what to look for in a good contract. Whether you are a do-it-yourself type or a homeowner who would rather seek professional assistance, there are multiple ways to insure that any home improvement contract you enter into is clear, thorough and fair. You should learn how to exercise your rights as a consumer, too. What’s in a good contract?

Know how to compare bidsOne of the easiest-to-learn but least-exercised homeowner skill is that of asking multiple companies to submit bids, and then selecting the most appropriate company for your needs. And guess what? It’s NOT usually the low bidder that turns out to be best. The reasons may surprise you. But, if you haven’t taken the time to be a comparison shopper for home improvements, in the way you are with most other products, you are exposing yourself to a variety of potential abuses.

The question of how to remodel a kitchen is not one to be answered in one page. In fact the contractors have gone to school and read many books to finally understand and be able to do it properly. However I will make an attempt to provide the fundamentals on this subject.

One thing is certain, you will have to keep reading and researching on this subject. Alternatively you could just hire a kitchen remodeling contractor to do the job for you.

Where should you start?

You need to start by assessing your kitchen usage patterns. This will enable you to determine the quality and extent of the remodeling task. For example, ask yourself the following questions; do you entertain a lot? Do you have a large or small family? And do you need a lot of dishware or glassware. You should also consider the amount of storage that you desire and the style of appliances that you want.

To help you find the appropriate design you can look through some magazines. Compile the cut outs and keep them all together for the next stage.

This would be deciding on the material to use. You could go with light wood, dark wood, painted cabinets, contemporary or traditional style etc. In fact you could simply choose to reface your kitchen cabinets and do minor replacements. Other things to consider include, flooring and countertops and backsplashes.

The next stage is to find a kitchen designer to populate a 3-d version of what you are looking for. When calling up the designer you need to have taken all the necessary measurements for your kitchen i.e. floor, cabinet, doors etc. You should at least have a floor plan based on the cut outs from the magazine and your own vision of the kitchen. The last stage would be hiring a kitchen remodeling contractor. This is the last stage on remodeling of the kitchen. Not unless you want to do it all by yourself.

I know that some people prefer to do it themselves. Let me tell you now, doing it on your own is not as simple as those DIY shops make it out to be. Spare yourself the trouble and find a kitchen remodeling contractor that will do the job brilliantly.

I do not have a contractor in mind but you can click the link to Find the best kitchen remodeling contractors in your area.

The time has come, the time is now…my bathroom needs a makeover! I can’t look at my old rusty and old shower one more day, and the vanity looks like it’s ready to be put to pasture. I’ve always wanted to get a double sink bathroom vanity, and the old daily fight with the shower curtain is about to end. I decided I should narrow down exactly what I wanted before getting out there and becoming overwhelmed by so many choices I don’t know which way is up anymore. Since I don’t remodel my bathroom everyday, I want to make sure I get exactly what will fit and what I want because I’ll probably be looking at it for years!

I decided to tackle the shower first, because well, I don’t want to shower in it any longer than I have to. I can’t stand it! I didn’t want to go with the old standard tub and shower combo with a rod and curtain for my new and improved bathroom. I’ve always wanted a gorgeous glass sliding door shower in my bathroom, that sparkles with chrome trim and clear glass. I think this would be a very classy upgrade from what I currently have, and make me feel a little bit like a movie star in my own home. It’s also easy to keep a glass shower clean, as long as I put a little water squeegee in there and quickly wipe off the excess water after every shower.

Next, I will replace that little decrepit wooden bathroom vanity with a nice new stone countertop one. I decided that with my chrome and glass shower enclosure that a white marble countertop would look absolutely fabulous. I wanted to go with a darker wood, to contrast the white and the shiny metal, so I found a beautiful mahogany base double vanity with a white marble countertop to complete my bathroom remodel and make it an entirely different space.

Now that I’ve narrowed down exactly what I want, it will be much easier to find it. I think I’ll get new towel rack and toilet paper holder fixtures in chrome to match my fantastic new sliding door shower. Nothing like a remodel to make you feel like you have a completely new home, at least in one room!

There are three possible scenarios involved in that question:

1. Stay where you are and renovate

2. Move to an existing house and renovate

3. Build a new house for you to move into

There are numerous considerations, not the least of which is how you feel about your existing location. That word – LOCATION – should be your primary focus. Do you prefer to remain where you are, or not? Is staying where you are an option, or are you forced to relocate due to a job change, or other issues?

If you wish to stay where you are, there’s no reason to read this article. Remodeling and/or expanding the place where you now live is the least expensive alternative – by far.
Your aggravation levels will increase during the construction, but they will do that with either of the other choices as well. If it gets to be too much, you can move to a motel for 2 months, eat dinner out every night, and still come out cheaper than either option 2 or option 3. If you want to be in your present home, case closed.

So let’s assume you have to move, and we’ll concentrate on option 2 vs. option 3. There are two important aspects of this topic which apply to both.
• In both cases you have to research the property with the building department to make sure you will be able to do what you wish. Verify zoning, lot size restrictions, and access to utilities.
•	You will have unknown costs (moving, insurance, taxes, financing costs, etc.) in either case.

Advantages of remodeling an existing house:
• Fewer hidden (or unknown) costs. New homes often have impact fees, ground preparation fees, and higher permit fees than those imposed for remodeling.
•	Hard construction costs will be less (usually, but not always).
• You can move into the house much sooner. If you have to leave your existing home quickly, you may not have the ability to wait for a new home to be built.

Advantages of building new:
• Unrestricted design potential, allowing you to end up with a more modern, better insulated home, with better traffic flow than you would have in an older building. Also, older homes have less closet/storage space than new ones.
•	Your long term energy costs will be lower because all of your equipment will be running more efficiently.
• Less disruption to family routine. While construction is happening, you’re still living in your present house. Then you move into a finished product (possibly with some decorative items to complete).

I’m sure you noticed that I haven’t listed costs in either list. The determining factor is going to be the extent of the renovation to the existing building. Depending upon the condition of the house, age, building codes and other factors, it can actually be more costly to remodel than to build new.

In either case, allow an extra 20% in your budget over and above any quoted costs you’ve obtained. 10% is for upgrades that you decide upon after initial pricing. The other 10% is for the rising costs of material and labor. If the price of oil goes through the roof again, 10% might not be enough.

If the older home was built between 1950 and 1978, there might be issues having to do with asbestos and lead paint. Make sure you get a professional inspection performed. You may also be required to bring the plumbing and electrical systems up to date.

In conclusion, renovating a home might be very rewarding, as well as the cheaper alternative. However, you have to do your homework before making the commitment, in order to insure that you’re not stepping into a money pit. Every situation is different. Your decision will probably come down to what your sixth sense tells you. Regardless of how you choose, anticipate that moving into a new home will take more time and more money than expected.

Kitchen Remodeling is the single most popular home renovation. Kitchens and Baths are often combined in a single project, but according to Michigan Contractors, kitchen remodeling is the most common request. Kitchen remodeling is certainly a very enticing project, but make sure you go about it with a mind to keeping the costs in check; the potential expense involved frightens some people before they even start. Kitchen remodeling costs are always likely to be an obstacle to getting the dream kitchen you have always wanted. Kitchen remodeling is the home improvement job that adds the most value to your house.

It can convert an old fashioned, dated kitchen into the showpiece of your home. The method of how to change the design will depend on your lifestyle and budget. Kitchen remodeling is the home improvement job that adds the most value to your house. In fact, you’ll recover 80-90% of your kitchen remodeling costs in the added value to your house – more if you’re handy enough to do the work yourself.

Kitchen remodeling is something that needs to be carefully planned using the size and configuration of the room. With this one room being the hub of the home, it needs to be designed with the triangle concept, which allows a person cooking to have easy access to the sink, refrigerator, and stove. It’s one of the most common home improvement projects in the U.S. When asked which room in their house they would most like to remodel, Americans overwhelmingly chose the kitchen. Kitchen remodeling is one of the best investments when it comes to both everyday use and increase in resale value. In addition, you might be able to save on energy as well by choosing energy efficient kitchen appliances.

It is without a doubt one of the best investments you as a homeowner can make. For most homeowners, the kitchen is the most important room in the house. Kitchen remodeling is a good way for you to increase the value of your home and to put a new spin on your old living areas. It is much more than choosing a paint color and cabinet style. The kitchen is the heart and soul of any house, so it’s important that your kitchen remodeling project results in a space that is functional, comfortable, and beautiful to take in all at the same time. Kitchen remodeling is one of the most intensive remodeling projects you can undertake in any house. The process involves important design decisions about cabinets, counter tops, lighting, appliances, layout, and finish treatments.

Whether your remodeling project will encompass a total tear-down and rebuild or a change of cabinetry, counter tops and major appliances, you will find yourself paying top dollar for remodeling this most important room in the house. Kitchen remodeling is also an investment in ongoing personal pleasure, increasing connectedness between all members of the family and easing the effort (while increasing the joy) of meal preparation. More homemade meals mean less fast food. Kitchen remodeling is a tricky job that requires taking into account existing architecture, plumbing and wiring, structural elements, and many other important aspects. For a project with so many considerations, it is crucial that you receive a kitchen remodeling professional who can care for all the things affected by the project, in accordance with your vision and budget. Kitchen remodeling is no small decision, so we’re more than happy to answer any and all of your questions to help you feel comfortable with yours.

In a recent report, more than 50% of Americans opined that if given a choice, they would choose their kitchens for a remodeling project! If you are tired of the old look of your house or feel that you need more functionality, then you are probably considering a home remodeling. Of all the rooms in your house, a spanking new look for the kitchen adds greatest value to your interiors. Kitchen remodeling is an enticing job, one that many families undertake after living with the same kitchen for more than a couple of years. However, to get the best look and worth from your new kitchen, it is important to keep certain points in mind while remodeling your kitchen.

Budget estimate: With such variety and convenience at your fingertips, it is hard not to get carried away by all that is available in the market. New textures, raw materials, sleek designs and handy appliances can make your cost shoot up. So, before you even think about remodeling your kitchen, draw up a budget, and stick to it. Get information about the cost of every component that features in your remodeling plan. Do not forget to enquire about labor costs, contracting services and applicable fee. Remember, the more you know, the better your chances of building a dream kitchen at an affordable cost.

Needs: Consider your needs before you start remodeling. Do you use the kitchen often? Are you the sort who likes to cook a lot? Do you entertain in the kitchen? Do you have small children who love to spend time with you while you cook? Or, are you the type who dines out most of the time, and only need your kitchen during the odd weekend when your live-in maid is away on a vacation? Your needs dictate the kind of kitchen you build. If you are building a custom kitchen, you may want to discuss this with the craftsmen who will be working on the job since they can often give you very good ideas.

Planning: Plan your kitchen remodeling project carefully keeping the size, configuration and layout of the kitchen in mind. Should you have a parallel countertop or is it L-shaped? Should cabinets run along two walls or one? What sort of conveniences do you want? Make a note of all these so you can actualize your ideas when work actually begins.

Design: Next, decide what kind of design you want. Should the décor be minimalist, contemporary or rustic? Contemporary designs are very flexible in terms of color and style. You have the freedom to experiment. Traditional designs are more in keeping with the age-old look of classic, polished wood. The final look of your kitchen will depend on the design you choose. Keep in mind though that your kitchen design must match the décor of the rest of your house.

A nicely done kitchen remodeling job can bring your kitchen, and your house, to a different level. For this, you must make sure that you are using raw materials of established quality and superior workmanship.
