If you live in the Louisville area then look to Centurion for the best in Roofing and Home Improvement.

Here are some roofing tips.

Our expert author talks more about Louisville Roof Repair.

Getting Roof Repairs in Portland OR by Mark Starr

Getting roof repair in OR for a home or commercial building is not a task many of us look to with pleasure. Roof repair in Portland, and everywhere else for that matter costs money. As a result, many of us ignore the issue for as long as we possibly can.

However, avoiding roof repair for your Portland home or business can cost a lot more in the long run. Residential and commercial roofing in the Portland area doesn’t have to involve a grief stricken experience. Review the following for details on how to tell if you need maintenance for your roof and ease the process of OR roof repair.

How to Tell If You Need Roof Repair for Your Portland Home or Business

Just because the roof has yet to cave in, doesn’t mean your OR roof isn’t in need of repair. Consider the age of your roof, as this is the most important aspect for determining whether you need repairs or an entirely new installation.

A good milestone for evaluating your residential or commercial roofing installation is within 10 years. Ask a qualified roofing contractor in the Portland area to conduct an inspection.

The condition of the shingles is telltale for whether your OR home or business is in need of roof repair. Your Portland roofing contractor will check for discoloration and other signs of wear, such as cracks and curling edges.

If the shingles are worn, your residential or commercial roofing contractor will likely need to conduct a more thorough investigation. Examining the condition of the underlying roofing structure will reveal the extent of your roof repair needs.

Roof Repair Portland — Check Your Insurance Policy

In some cases, your insurance policy may cover some of the costs for your Portland roof repair needs. Contact your provider to determine whether you have coverage for anything in relation to repair and maintenance.

Find a Qualified Roofing Contractor for Roof Repair in Portland

Get the most from your residential or commercial roofing job in Portland and hire a qualified contractor. Avoid the Portland roofing contractor who lowers the price tag and offers shoddy workmanship in return.

Look for a professional who can address all of your OR roof repair needs. Make sure they are licensed, insured and provide a fair warranty that covers materials and workmanship.

Have your roof inspected at least yearly. Often expensive repairs can be avoided by correcting a small damage area now. As Franklin said, “a stitch in time saves nine.”

Roofing Tips For The Do It Yourselfer

Whenever you begin in a building project you must get a permit from your local government. This will require a building plan. After you have your building plan and have received a permit you are ready to begin building. In the past it was necessary to build trusses by hand, however today most are pre-made and can be special ordered at a lumberyard or building supply store. This is the cheapest and easiest route for a do-it-yourselfer.

Roofing is a dangerous job. Before you begin make sure you have safe tools that you are familiar with. Also be sure to read any safety warnings on your supplies. Always wear gloves and goggles to protect your body.

To begin installation, start with the end trusses. After these are installed you may move on to the side trusses. These will be difficult to lift and you will need to hire a crane. Next it is time to place the sheathing. On top of the sheathing you should place builders felt this will help to protect your new roof. Depending on the type of roof you build you may need to install soffits. Your building plan should detail whether this is necessary or not.

If the roof you are installing is part of an addition you must follow all of these guidelines however there is an additional step. After installing the trusses but before installing the sheathing you must install valley jacks were the new roof and old roof join.

The final step to building your roof is adding shingles and/or other topical agents such as fire barrier coating or leak barrier coating. There are many kinds of shingles available. Durability and style are both important. You want your home to look nice, but you also want a product that is affordable and will last.

While building a roof on your own is difficult, the money you save can be well worth it. Just remember with this and any other building project you do make sure you have the proper permit.

For Louisville Roofing call Centurion: 502-298-8825. Centurion Home Improvements and Roofing of Louisville would like to offer a few notes about your roof.

When a roof leaks the problem can be worse than waterspots on the ceiling. The wood underneath can soak up the leaking water and rot. The wood gets weaker and will eventually loose strength enough to break.

A leak is easy to spot when you start getting water spots on your ceiling. Before that happens you should be inspecting your roof. Go out a couple of times a year and give it a good look. If you have binoculars that’s even better. Look for cracked or missing roofing tiles.

3. Your roof is one of the most important parts of your home. It protects everything from the elements, without it water damage. Even health problems can come of it because moisture facilitates mold and fungus growth that can cause respiratory and other health problems. These things can be harmful to anyone especially young children. Mold is even known to trigger chronic fatigue syndrome so don’t take it lightly.

By the way, if you have water spots on a white plaster ceiling, they sometimes can be lightened or removed by putting plastic over your furniture and spraying Clorox Cleanup on the area. It’s amazing what it will do. Wear old clothes and it’s best to have eye protection and a painters mouth cover. That’s it for now. If you don’t need a roof but just need some questions answered please feel free to call or email us. We love to hear from people who find our website and we like to help.

If you have water coming through your ceiling it has to be your roof, right? Usually, but not always. In a recent apartment complex repair we did the trouble was with a damaged firewall.

Finding damage to a firewall: This firewall between two buildings had suffered weather damage over the years causing the roof to leak. The mortar had deteriorated and the brick is beginning to loosen. If not repaired moisture will get into the mortar joints and continue to weaken the wall until it crumbles. This video shows the damage that has already occurred.

Winterizing your home shouldn’t stop with the part you can easily reach. You need to consider your roof as well. Centurion provides resources so you can make the right choices for your home.

Roofing Tips For the Winter Season
By Edie Pastis

Preparation for the changing seasons involves a lot of work. In Spring, that means packing away the long johns, breaking out the gardening tools, putting in extra gym hours to prep for swim season, and tackling the infamous spring cleaning. When Fall rolls around, the long johns resurface, we surrender to that comforting layer of “holiday weight” (what are bulky sweaters for?), we quietly cry over the loss of long, sunny days, and we moodily begin winter-proofing our cars and homes to ward off the snow-filled months to follow.

When winter approaches, the condition of our roofs is pretty easy to overlook in the hullabaloo of new tires, snow mats, antifreeze rationing, and new wardrobes comprised solely of fleece. But investing in a good roof plays a large part in protecting everything underneath that roof which we hold dear: our children, family heirlooms, pet sea monkeys, vintage Beatles albums etc. Here are some things to keep in mind about roof maintenance, whether you’re trying to protect grandma’s quilts or your favorite Fab Four vinyl.

Most roofs under 5-years-old should be in pretty good shape, but these simple tasks can sufficiently maintain a healthy roof for approaching winter:

keep the roof surface clear of debris

clean out the gutters regularly

check for leaks, rust and rot

trim overhanging tree branches or shrubbery

replace damaged shingles

While these preventative methods will ensure you the most mileage out of a good roof, if you’re building a new home or in need of serious roof repair, a roofing contractor is often the best bet. A roof that’s over 15-years-old and suffering from heavy leakage and other damage might require a brand new roof installation. While it can certainly save money to tackle the job yourself, a rookie mistake could subject you to further costs down the road, and then you couldn’t afford those cool, new ear-warmers that everyone’s rocking at work. When purchasing new roofing for your house, you’ll want to do some cost analysis based on three main criteria: roofing material, the area size of the roof, and removal of the existing roof.

Some common roofing materials include:

copper

fiberglass

metal

rubber

galvanized steel

Once you’ve picked out your material, measured the area, and gotten an honest roofing cost assessment from a reputable contractor, you should have a pretty good handle on how much you’ll shell out to maintain your “home sweet home” until the day you and your pension can run away to Fiji…and banish unflattering, fleece vests for good.
